Hummingbird Magic

Hummingbird in action - Guenette photo

“Some of my old memories feel trapped in amber in my brain, lucid and burning, while others are like the wing beat of a hummingbird, an intangible, ephemeral blur.”
(Mira Bartok from The Memory Place)

I’ve wandered my garden for weeks with my camera at the ready in the hope that I might capture a hummingbird in the wild photo. This morning I was in the right place at the right time. I hope you take as much pleasure from these two photos as I have.

  1. Excellent photo! I love these little fellas. We’ve had major hummy wars this summer, Fran. With three feeders within close proximity, you’d think they’d feast in harmony…nope. They definitely don’t like to share.

    • I see these little wars all day from my kitchen door – we planted a beautiful bed of deep red geraniums and all shades of petunias right outside. The dive bombing and zooming is amazing. But never have I been able to snap a photo there. Out at the back of the garden, the hummers seemed a bit more laid back.

These little darlungs come to see my friend in Ontario, Canada, every year. Sadly, on the times I visitefd, they had all flown South to escape the bitter winters. This reminds me of happy days spent with very dear friends.

Love the poem–the different kinds of memories, those that are lucid and burning vs. those that, like the wing beat of a hummingbird, are an intangible, ephemeral blur.

And your photos are gorgeous. The colors in the first one are so pretty, and the second one is sharp as can be.

  8. Your photos are amazing. I was given a hummingbird feeder for xmas 2 years ago and have never put it up. I think I’ll do that this weekend…I’ve got the perfect tree right next to my deck.

Lovely, lovely – depending on where you live, I’m thinking it’s a female Ruby-Throated or Rufous.
